Local organization
Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (NCU), founded in 1945, is the biggest university in northern Poland and is outstanding both in terms of its scientific potential as well as the courses of study on offer, forms of education, and numbers of students and graduates. It consistently ranks among top 5 Polish universities.

Center for Language Evolution Studies (CLES) at NCU, has been active in the field of language evolution research since its foundation in 2012. It has also organized numerous conferences and outreach events related to language evolution.

The Department of English at NCU was established in 1945 but already in 1952 was closed for political reasons (in the Stalinist era English studies were viewed as potentially subversive). It was re-opened in 1986 and the first graduates completed their studies in 1992. In 2011 the Department was moved to a new site, one of the most modern university buildings in Poland.
